Tony was selected as the 35th overall pick to the Chicago Bears in the 1998 NFL draft. Tony was recognized as Chicago’s top coverage defender against the pass and run. Tony was named to the NFL ‘All-Rookie’ team by ‘Pro Football Weekly’ and the Football News’, and was voted by his teammates as the 1998 rookie recipient of the ‘Brian Piccolo Award’, awarded annually to the rookie and veteran who best exemplify the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication (and sense of humor) displayed by Mr. Piccolo. While at Chicago, Tony had four(4) 14-tackle games, and became the first Bear since 1980 to record more than 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons (and the first since Mike Singletary) to rank among the top 4 in team tackles. After playing for Chicago for 4 seasons (and starting in 64 games consecutively), Tony was acquired by the San Francisco 49ers in 2002. Tony immediately excelled with San Francisco and was named to the Sports Illustrated and Football Digest ‘All-Pro’ team in 2002. In 2003, Tony was the recipient of the ‘Len Eshmont Award’, given to the most inspirational and courageous player. This continues to be the 49ers most prestigious annual award. Tony was the 1st 49er to have received this award in their 1st season. Tony was also awarded the ‘Ed Block Courage Award’ in 2002, for representing courage and leadership in the face of adversity.
